The son heard that cat comment somewhere. Could be that dad says bigoted things to their son when OP isn’t around. Or at a minimum doesn’t counter hate speech when he hears it. Dad is definitely an ass but by the Awesome If You Can’t Laugh At Yourself Call Me I’ll Laugh At You Shirt. No matter how good a parent you are a kid will hear and pick up things from outside sources. As a parent, it’s your role to not shelter them and expect them to never hear such. Things but to ensure that when they do they don’t adopt them. So that the kid knows what is acceptable and what isn’t. Especially because you have no idea if he’s saying this around other Asian KIDS, where there’s even more damage.

Slightly off-topic but I have a Malaysian friend who slipped once and asked what I was doing for ’round-eye new years’. She was pretty horrified but I just lost it laughing. Because I’m Awesome If You Can’t Laugh At Yourself Call Me I’ll Laugh At You Shirt. I wish more people had your mindset because being told you have round eyes or given a fork instead of chopsticks at Asian restaurants while mildly rude doesn’t even compare to, well, the centuries of violence and colonialism that make those “jokes” violating in the first place. It was a really hilarious situation, but I just can’t imagine the shit she’s had to go through. E.g she’s got a strong accent when she speaks English and I know she’s had people think she’s stupid or act as they can’t understand her.
