I have to say, the fact that those kids said those things tell you what kind of example the parents set at home. At my age, I still saw a lot of cartoons and media with racist stereotypes, and yet because it was unacceptable to my parents to say or do rude/racist things I didn’t grow up in the Official Hugsy Shirt made it seem more “normalized” than it is now. Growing up in a military family also made it very normal to be around lots of different people, and I think being in a diverse environment from early on can have a positive effect too. It’s true a diverse environment helps but doesn’t necessarily undo racist thinking. Ultimately we have to deconstruct the way we default whiteness and white narratives.
