I’m kind of upset that Rambo movies ended up the way they did. The first one was serious. And the thoughtful movie that commented on the struggles of veterans. And turned the subsequent movies into straight action movies. Rambo was meant to be a broken man struggling to come to terms with his civilian life. That monologue fucking gets me, man. He acts it so well too. Underrated for sure. I absolutely love First Blood, but I find the ending a little difficult. The monologue is super serious and depressing, and then the camera shifts back over to Trautman and all I can see is that actor playing his part in Hot Shots Part Deux.

Having the character in a comedy role just makes it hard to take him seriously in First Blood. I actually haven’t seen him in anything else so I don’t have that problem. But I understand how it can diminish the scene. Trautman kills him. It was a deleted scene. I saw one of the later ones first. When I finally saw First Blood years later…much, much different movie. Really too bad they didn’t stick with the original ending and come up with some other way to make Stallone an action movie dude. You can’t really talk about just the change in the ending and pointing to that as a means to get sequels. The entire character was changed from the book to the film. The underlying characteristics are there but the book version of Rambo killed a ton of people.
